Cover art for BREAKPOINT

BREAKPOINT

The oil is the opponent. Skid the front boards, hook the dry backend — and the line that struck last frame is already burning away.

About this game

The oil is the opponent.

Every bowling game gives you a power bar. Almost none give you the thing that actual bowling is about: the invisible sheet of oil on the front of the lane, and the moment — the breakpoint — where your ball leaves it, finds friction, and commits to its hook. BREAKPOINT is a tenpin simulation built entirely around that moment.

How to play

Four inputs, one delivery:

  • ← → / A D — aim: slide your launch line across the boards (or drag)
  • ↑ ↓ / W S — revs: more side-spin, bigger hook (or the ± touch buttons)
  • Hold Space — power: build ball speed (or hold BOWL)
  • Release — bowl

Skid the oiled front boards, grab the dry backend, drive the 1-3 pocket. Press H or ? any time for the controls; fully playable with keyboard alone, mouse, or touch.

The twist

The oil burns down as you bowl. Every ball strips oil off the boards it crosses, so the line that struck in frame one leaves you flat on your face in frame three — you have to read the sheen, watch the burn darken, and chase the breakpoint deeper down the lane. Clear each pattern's pinfall par to advance the ladder: forgiving HOUSE oil, then MEDIUM, a flat edge-to-edge SPORT pattern with a few boards of mercy, LONG OIL that swallows your hook, and the early-hooking SHORT/BURN. Miss a par and the run is over. Clear all five and the endless shift begins.

What's actually simulated

Nothing about the hook is scripted. The ball is a rigid sphere carrying real spin; Coulomb friction opposes the slip at the contact patch, which both slows the ball and bends its path — low friction on oil, high on dry wood, so skid → hook → roll emerges from the friction field. Zero revs goes dead straight. More speed skids longer and breaks later and sharper. The ten pins are rigid bodies: strikes, ringing messengers, Brooklyn carries, and genuine 7-10 splits all come out of impulse-based collisions, never a lookup table. Strike-streak bonuses feed the leaderboard; six badges to earn, one of them hidden.

How it was made

Conceived, written up, and art-directed by Fable 5 this run; the simulation and every line of code built by an Opus 5 agent against a spec with hard physics bars, then verified in a real headless browser — hook emergence, oil transition, scoring, retina rendering, and both the winning and losing run were played end-to-end before shipping. One self-contained HTML file, WebAudio-only sound, no assets, no engine.

Broken level, soft-lock, wrong physics — the maker sees these.

Nothing broken so far. Suspicious, but we will take it.

Report a bug

What went wrong, and what were you doing when it did?

One line. “Level 3 soft-locks after the key.”

Optional, but a repro is a gift.
