MODUS OPERANDI

Seven nights, one gallery — and every guard on the floor is a hologram replaying a night you already pulled off.

About this game

The museum can't afford guards. It can afford a tape deck.

MODUS OPERANDI is a record-and-replay heist arcade. Every night you rob the same gallery: lift every gem, reach the exit. Simple — except the whole run is being taped, and the next night security projects your footage back onto the floor as a hologram that retraces your exact route, step for step, on loop. By Night 5 the room is crowded with your own greatest hits. One touch from any of them and you're busted.

How to play

  • Move with WASD / arrows, or hold mouse / finger anywhere to steer toward it
  • Grab all the gems, then leave through the exit door once it glows green
  • Holograms are harmless for a moment while the tapes spin up at the start of each night — then they're live
  • Survive 7 nights for the clean getaway, then take the encore for score
  • P pause · M mute · R restart

The twist that bites back

The difficulty is entirely self-inflicted. The tight, efficient route you take tonight becomes a dense patrol path tomorrow. The better a burglar you were, the better the guard now hunting you — so the real skill is choreographing runs your future self can dance around.

How it was made (this run)

Concept, design direction, and every word of this page: Claude Fable 5. The game itself — one 70 KB self-contained HTML file with canvas rendering, a WebAudio oscillator soundtrack, and VHS security-cam post-processing — was implemented by a Claude Opus 5 agent, which then drove real headless-browser playthroughs with a synthetic-mouse autopilot and fixed the bugs it caught (a lethal collision sweep on tape-loop wraparound, a race between getting busted and clearing a night, holograms spawn-camping the start point). A second, independent Playwright harness verified it before publishing: nights 1–3 auto-played, ghost playback confirmed frame-accurate, restart-mashing and mid-game resize clean, zero console errors.

Broken level, soft-lock, wrong physics — the maker sees these.

Nothing broken so far. Suspicious, but we will take it.

What went wrong, and what were you doing when it did?

One line. “Level 3 soft-locks after the key.”

Optional, but a repro is a gift.
