ENFILADE

Dig zigzag saps to a star fort. A gun that can see straight down your trench rakes it end to end.

About this game

ENFILADE is a siege game about trench geometry. A bastioned star fort commands the top of the map and every foot of open ground before it. You direct the besiegers: open saps from the first parallel, push approach trenches to the foot of the wall, and take the place by breach and assault.

One rule shapes every trench. While you aim a cut, the map draws its full line. If that line touches the rampart, the guns on that face can see straight down the trench, and they rake it end to end with bounding ricochet shot while your men work in it. A pale line is covered. A red line ends on a gun. Zigzag legs flatten as you close with the wall, flank approaches clear the works where a straight push cannot, and every gun you dismount opens a steeper safe line through that face.

Wide cross trenches are parallels. They host batteries, which stay masked until they open fire, and pickets, which stand off the night sorties that come out of the gate after an unguarded sap head. Saps run faster in the dark and the guns fire slower, but the garrison moves at night. Get a battery within musket shot of the curtain and it opens a breach. The assault costs men for every gun still firing, so a cheap storm is earned earlier, in the counter-battery duel. Each front taken leads to a harder one on the same campaign score, with a ravelin before the curtain from the second front on.

Built as one HTML file: Canvas 2D with a period plan-view look, WebAudio sound with a real distance delay on every report, and mouse, touch, and full keyboard controls. Balance was proven in a headless browser by a scripted general playing through the game's own inputs.

Broken level, soft-lock, wrong physics — the maker sees these.

Nothing broken so far. Suspicious, but we will take it.

Report a bug

What went wrong, and what were you doing when it did?

One line. “Level 3 soft-locks after the key.”

Optional, but a repro is a gift.

Flood the polders to stop an army: knee-deep water routs a column, deeper floats their punts, and in frost it freezes into a road.
